Concept of "Creativity Week radi!2014

Press release: Wide programme of the Creativity Week “radi!2014”

From May 12 till May 18, annual Creativity Week “radi!2014” takes place all over Latvia. This year the Week is dedicated to design issues and design thinking. Several big conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions and fashion shows are included in the programme.

Nowadays design builds bridges between creative sector, education, entrepreneurship, state administration, technologies and other industries. Smart and meaningful use of culture and design, grounded on environment values, can facilitate business, influence development of innovations, as well as improve social conditions and our life quality. Design thinking is a creative work method, which is focused on the result.

Ms. Dace Melbārde, Culture Minister, pointed out: “The Creativity Week coincides with changes in nature – burgeons burst, everything blossoms out, and we wish to say how important it is to unleash human potential and creative forces. We have been given a natural ability to be creative. Latvia is not rich in natural resources or considerable labour force. Therefore, we have to find resources somewhere else – in intuition, imagination, knowledge, and above all – in courage. Creative ideas cannot be implemented without courage and one of our goals is to embolden people to come up with their creative ideas, to find supportive fellows and implement these ideas in life.”

“radi!2014” opening event “Ideas Gym”, on May 13, and educational conference, on May 14, are two key events of the Creativity Week.

“Ideas Gym” is open to professionals of creative industries and the ones who are interested in seeking answers to the following questions – what is design thinking and does design drive innovations in Europe?; how does design influence environment and life quality; do mutual partnerships possess development perspectives in creative industries?; what should be the creative partnerships programme 2014–2015?

The event was opened by Culture Minister Dace Melbārde, and expertise was shared by not only representatives of Latvian design and creative industries, bet also internationally recognized experts, including Anna Whicher, lead researcher on policies for design and innovation at Cardiff Metropolitan University, Prof. Marzia Mortati and Prof. Beatrice Villari from Polytechnic University of Milan, Alice Rawsthorn, design journalist, critic and author of the book “Hello World: Where Design Meets Life”, and others.

Task of the Educational Conference “Future School Begins Today” is to seek for ideas, how to form an innovative approach to the learning process. The Conference was opened by Ms. Ina Druviete, Education and Science Minister.

Education and Science Minister Ina Druviete said: “It is important that education system provides child with not only formal and measurable knowledge, but also develops creativity. During the learning process we focus more and more on child’s individuality and personality, and we do not see schoolchildren as static units in the labour market any more. A lot has been thought about developing social and emotional skills. Hopefully the Creativity Week “radi!” will provide ideas for innovative approach in both learning and research processes, because scientific activities are impossible without a creative approach.”

Practical part of the Conference consists of workshops. By using design thinking methods and delivering short thematic lectures, ideas how to improve school environment and develop creativity within the learning process are being sought. Louise Bamfield, Associate Director of Education at the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (Great Britain), Mikko Leppänen, Director of Viherkallio Elementary school (Finland), Aija Freimane, Associate Professor of the Design Department at the Art Academy of Latvia and others share their experience.

During the Creativity Week, especial attention is being paid to fashion industry as one of the most vivid representatives of design sector. On May 16, Didier Grumbach, President of the French Federation of Couture, Ready-to-Wear Couturiers and Fashion Designers (Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de mode), and Farid Chenoune, fashion historian, journalist, consultant and expert in fashion and luxury products, will deliver lectures at the Art Academy of Latvia. On its turn, on May 17, Museum of Decorative Arts and Design will mark its 25th anniversary with a special surprise – fashion show presenting the Museum’s collection “Timeless”, which has been created in cooperation with the fashion brand “QooQoo”.

Already for the third year, initiators of “radi!2014” are the Latvian Culture Ministry and the British Council Latvia Office. This year series of events have been created together with strategic partners: the Ministry of Education and Science, the State Chancellery, the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO, the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, platform FOLD, foundation “Riga 2014” and other cooperation partners.
